The 9th digit in the vin is a check digit, kind of like the last number in
a ISBN number in a book or a parity check in a computer/network.  There
are several websites that show you how to calculate that number, here's
one:

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~sns5r/resint/empiostf/checkdigit.htm

My vin is WAUDC0852DA900453.  Therefore my check digit is 2, the 85 means
typ85, and the 2 is a way to check that the rest of the vin is legit.
