Bummer when on the road and at the mercy of the uneducated and  uncaring.
I think all these cars start hard (if at all) when the temp dips to below  
15, and you can't get them warm. My car requires starting fluid at those temps.  
I just squirt it into the throttle body metering screw hole, re-install the  
screw, and fire it up.
The noisy speedo could be the "mileage counter box" right behind the  
firewall, if your car has one. If you have a one piece cable, this won't apply.  I 
had my speedo rebuilt as the needle was jumping and sounded awful. When I  
reinstalled it the symptoms continued. I finally "rebuilt" the "mileage  counter 
box" and lubed it up- noise gone. That was over a year ago.
