There is a lower cost alternative, Megasquirt.

Fully programmable EFI. It perhaps does not have as many features as the 
034EFI, and it does have a smaller map table. And you do have to build it 
yourself. Source code for the controller is available, and someone has 
already written code that enables the EFI hardware to be used as a 
programmable ignition controller.

There are a few I5 turbo Audi motors running on Megasquirt already: 
http://members.shaw.ca/megasquirt/itruns.htm , and all seem very glad that 
they have ditched their CIS.

All very interesting for those who like to mess around with that kind of
