About 5 months ago the left rubber piece that goes on the inside of the shifter bracket came off.  So i took it out so it wouldnt be floating around till i got a replacement.  It drove fine, besides the fact that the bolt going through the shifter would catch on the holes in the bracket where the rubber mounted, causing the shifter to just stick.

Anyways... i put in a rubber replacement a couple of days ago, and now first and second take as much strenght as one can muster to get it in there.  It cant go to the left enough to slide into the proper position.  I want to just bend the bracket over just a few milimeters so it will go in easy.. but that wouldnt be fixing the problem.

Whats the real problem, and how do i fix it?
