I can provide useful info on this subject.
Last summer I had to rebuilt my WX head.
Like you, I ordered some inserts from Audi, since they were less than 3$
each. Like you, I got the long ones, units I think fits on the newer L5
engine with a different injector. These don't fits my injectors.
But, luckily, the Fel-Pro head gasket set I ordered for the head job
contained the correct "shorty" inserts. So these are still available from a
supplier non-OEM.
I don't have the gasket set box anymore but all the different part numbers
were stamped on it. The kit was Fel-Pro HS21211B3 and if you can find one,
you'll know the inserts Fel-Pro part number. The OEM part number for the
shorty is 063 133 555.
I looked at the Fel-Pro online catalogue but they don't specify injector
inserts. Maybe the paper catalogues are more complete.

Good luck!

PS: If I remember well, the newer inserts can be cut shorter and they will
then fits your engine, I think.

Subject: [urq] Fuel Injector Inserts
> So, about eight months ago I called my friendly Audi dealer here in Denver
and ordered some fuel injector inserts for my '83 TQC. I just got around to
picking them up today. The delrin insert waiting for me is completely
different from the original (or my old ones have been nibbled away over the
200k miles clocked). The new ones are about 2 inches long and it seems they
will shroud the injector except for the tip. My old ones are just long
enough to accomodate the "o" ring groove that holds the injector in place.

NLA. He realy didn't know much. Couldn't even find the fiche for the WX
engine. Told me there was no such designation. Kept telling me it was a WE.
