The R32 comes distinctively yet discretely badged, is special enough
that I'd be surprised if a new owner, especially a kid, would remove
it. I'd be even more surprised that a kid would have one though
because of their exclusivity and high price, unless you have some very
generous (foolish?) parents in your proximity.
It was most likely a 1.8t, possibly modded, that challenged you. The
R32 is not referred to as a GTI in anyway that I have seen so that
would be another possible tip. I see more and more of those 1.8t
Golfs/GTIs around that have had some enhancement. 20 years ago, I'd
be agog, but alas, VW was far too late in fleshing out the GTI line.
Sadly (not!) I was already thoroughly engaged in things Audi by the
time they really impressed me again with a GTI.
