  Andrew,
Yes, you likely have a failing HG. There are a couple different failure
possibilities... There can be a leak into a combustion chamber, resulting in
burned AF... the sweet smell, or there can be a leak into an oil passage... or
  both.

Many times, a leak into an oil passage can cause a sort of yellowish buildup
on the bottom side of your oil cap. But this isn't always true. The easiest
(and weirdest) way to tell for sure, is to actually taste your oil. Yep...
sounds weird, but you'll know very quickly, and you can always wipe your tongue
off. If there is AF in your oil, you will get a taste very similar to the
smell of burning AF. A very small amount of oil on your fingertip will tell the
  tale.

A combustion chamber leak can often escalate to an extreme. Worst case is
cylinder filling after shutdown... hydrolock. The other possibility is major
pressurization of your cooling system resulting from combustion pressure and
  boost.

You likely have at least a combustion chamber leak, and that should be tended
to. You will likely have AF in your oil as well. Since you're burning AF at
fire up, AF is certainly getting into a cylinder. When the engine is shut
down, the AF will accumulate in the cylinder, slowly leak past the rings, and
  into your oil pan.
  HTH,
  Dave in CO
