the only reason not to is cost, first you gotta buy the dye, then you gotta buy the UV light source, sounds like a group purchase tool to be rented for all the urq listers as the new dyes work in coolant or oils and the light works on all, and no I am not volunteering to administer the former in any way. Why not use those "fluorescent" dyes that are used in finding leaks. By
dumping a small amount of dye into your coolant reservoir, running your
engine, and then sampling a small amount of oil after shut down would tell
you rather quickly on whether there is anti-freeze in your oil.... (no
  tasting of oil needed!!!! ????)

Look for these type dyes or ask at any local auto parts store...

You are NUTS! Dj licking a known carcinogen, how long have you been doing
that? carbon monoxide is a cumulative poison,it does not go away, it kills
brain cells. to all listers, DO NOT TASTE YOUR OIL OR COOLANT. FATAL kidney
and liver problems could result. PERIOD! and any suggestion to taste your
oil or coolant is beyond STOOPID, it is IRRESPONSIBLE, UNSAFE, do not do it.
fucking unbelievable, does Djdawson2 at aol.com snort brake dust too?

    Andrew,
Yes, you likely have a failing HG. There are a couple different failure
possibilities... There can be a leak into a combustion chamber, resulting
  in
burned AF... the sweet smell, or there can be a leak into an oil
  passage... or
    both.

Many times, a leak into an oil passage can cause a sort of yellowish
  buildup
on the bottom side of your oil cap. But this isn't always true. The
  easiest
(and weirdest) way to tell for sure, is to actually taste your oil.
  Yep...
sounds weird, but you'll know very quickly, and you can always wipe your
  tongue
off. If there is AF in your oil, you will get a taste very similar to the
smell of burning AF. A very small amount of oil on your fingertip will
  tell the
    tale.

A combustion chamber leak can often escalate to an extreme. Worst case is
cylinder filling after shutdown... hydrolock. The other possibility is
  major
pressurization of your cooling system resulting from combustion pressure
  and
    boost.

You likely have at least a combustion chamber leak, and that should be
  tended
to. You will likely have AF in your oil as well. Since you're burning AF
  at
fire up, AF is certainly getting into a cylinder. When the engine is shut
down, the AF will accumulate in the cylinder, slowly leak past the rings,
  and
    into your oil pan.
    HTH,
    Dave in CO
