For Martin D,
If I'm wrong, then Martin P. will correct me, as usual :-))
On our urQs (1982 to 1987, North-America), there is 2 different subs
(early and late), 2 different swaybars (with an annular groove and c-clamp
or with a loop-end and end-link) and 2 different a-arms (with slot for
c-clamp or hole for end-link). As Martin said, cut date is around mid 1983
that is 85-D-900600.
The only visual (and maybe functionnal) difference between the 2 subs is
the way the swaybar is bolted to the sub: with a small c-clamp (1 bolt) or
with a bigger bracket (2 bolts) à la 4000Q/90Q (see TFA ). I think any
swaybar can be installed on any subframe, providing you have the correct
brackets and bushings for that subframe. Be aware that the early style
bushings are NLA at Audi, however www.audipoly.com seems to sells some
poly replacement units.
The sway bars and the a-arms goes together unless you modify the a-arms to
accept the other swaybar attachment. But they are independent of the
subframes, functionnaly.
If I am right, the only difference between the old style a-arms and the
newer units is the hole for the swaybar attachment. Except that, they are
dimensionally identical.
Then, to install a newer swaybar on an older style a-arm, you just drill a
hole (and reinforce the area maybe ??) into the a-arms to connect the
end-links.
If one wants to see all that blah blah illustrated, just open TFA to 4,
11, 36-00 for our cars and all this will become clear...
For those without TFA, I can send a PDF version of the page, if need be.

Subject
[urq] UrQ SUb-Frame(s)
I read with interest all the recommendations on this subject but
found
it difficult to sort the complete situation due to references to control
arms
etc. Basic questions for someone to answer please relating to just the
subframe(s):
1. Are the 83 sub-frames unique to the 83?
2. If the answer to 1 is NO can they be replaced, without
modifications, by a sub-frame from some other model?
3. If modifications are required, which model sub-frames can be used
and what are the modifications?
Thanks
