Actually, been around for some time now -- even on rather pedestrian Buicks.
Yes, it's a lot cheaper using ther ABS signals to determine tire pressure
problems.

The Tirerack also sells the more sophisticated systems for ~$230 and up:

... with the Ford SUV/Firestone tire debacle the gummint is mandating
tire pressure monitoring, so the problem's going to get worse ... but
that will probably also mean the prices will get more reasonable.

A few friends of mine have been getting Mini Coopers ... one of the
things I learned on those is that BMW solved the problem using the ABS
system ... they compare the relative rotation rates of the wheels and
use that to determine when a tire has lost pressure ... pretty
innovative IMO!
