[urq] Injector cooling fan...or something else

After a four-month head reconditioning project, my car has been back
on the road for a couple of weeks (thanks to suggestions from a number
of people here).
I haven't been driving it a lot because there is a fair amount of
front suspension work I'm going to do on it, I also have all new motor
and tranny mounts to install. Oh, and one of my outside CV boots
cracked while the car was sitting so I have to replace that too.
I have not taken the car over 3500rpm yet, I've been trying to ease it
into things.
Because I'm waiting for an odd shaped hose that goes on the warm-up
regulator, and I've not been driving the car hard, and it's quite cold
outside here in Montana, I have not re-installed the injector cooling
fan.
A couple of days ago, after driving it to the grocery store, and
idling it in the parking lot for awhile waiting for my girlfriend, it
would buck and hesitate when I started from a light or a stop sign.
After the engine got over 2800rpm, or after I got it into third, it
would stop doing it.
I always thought that the injector cooling fan was one of those things
that rarely comes on, I had never heard it, and didn't even know if it
worked. But whenever it gets warm, my car seems to do this.
The easy test, is, of course, to re-install the fan, which I'll do
this afternoon. I guess my question for the list is this: Could this
be the beginning of fuel pump failure? It only seems to be a problem
when the car is "hot' and I'm in stop-and-go situations, it does fine
cruising.
