instead of LED you might consider a kit source that has been used on my
Son's car for over a year with no problem.

illumination is always at a constant level, and very reliable, never had a
glitch and you chose the color

... haven't tried it, but it sounds like an excellent idea. An LED
would certainly help reduce the amount of heating that occurs on the
flexprint board and IC housing. The incandescent light is shining into
a light pipe anyway, so the reduced illumination angle of the LED should
not cause a problem (in the past I haven't had good luck replacing
incandescents with LEDs because they don't cover an area as well) ...
you can certainly get bright enough LEDs nowadays ...
