As I said, I've never seen anything but an '81 4000 5+5, but I can confirm that the battery in my '81 4000 5+5 was mounted under the rear seat and I can produce photos in the factory service manual (1st version) that show the battery mounted under the rear seat as well.

Of course, we all know how accurate Audi's service manauals are...
