The wheeze may be a leak in the hose that runs up to the back of the
guage. That same possible leak may also be contributing to the hard
starting by allowing unmetered air to enter the intake.
When shifting into reverse it is normal to push down on the shift
lever. That is a safety feature to prevent engagement of reverse when
shifting to 4th.
