This is probably a bit late of a reply to be helpful, I but I dug out my 
old coupe manual, remembering dealing with this once.

This applies to the WE 2.1 liter n/a engine, so I'm not sure how well it 
will translate to the engine in question:

warm, inlet: 0.20-0.30 mm exhaust: 0.40-0.50 mm
cold, inlet: 0.15-0.25 mm exhaust: 0.35-0.45 mm

warm is specified as coolant at least 35 C, cold is not spec'd but 
probably means room temerature, not -40.

I also didn't realize that any type 44's had solid lifters?  Though they 
would have all been hydraulic by then...
