I have always tested them on the stove with a thermometer so as to  tell when 
they did open if at all. If you're using Pyrex, you can put that on  the 
burner. You do need a high temp thermometer though. Sounds like you may have  
found a smoking gun. Do remember that a t-stat doesn't open very far with only  
hot water poured over it. Boil it and see what happens.
