I have had the same problem off & on for years. Mine was almost always hot
but did occur a few times cold.
I have to date;
1 Replaced the starter switch (twice)
2 Rebuilt the original starter (twice)
3 Used a known good 200 20V starter
4 Used a new non OEM aftermarket starter
5 Relayed the starter
6 Installed a vent in the hood (also to iliminate vapor lock issues, and
cool the starter)
and
7 Installed a push button starter switch.
Oh- I forgot the number of times I tried to insulate the starter also (no
help).
And- yes the original heat shield is and always has been in place, except
for one experiment to see if it was in fact holding heat and blocking cooling
airflow.
I am currently experiencing no problems (fingers reverently crossed), but we
have had the coolest summer on record in Colorado. The problem was a lock
guarantee to happen in 97 plus heat on asphalt parking lot after 15 minutes set.
We haven't had that but 2-3 times this year. Maybe I've solved the problem-
maybe not.
Some cars will do this, and never yield their secret. My brother bought a
used but very clean Acura Legend for my niece, and has chased that very problem
on that car with dealer help for 2 years. No one has found the cause to date.
In the late 60s I had a 64 Chebbie Super Sport with a 327 that did the same
thing.
It's a universal curse NOT attributable to the the Audi gods.
