[urq] Broken front sway bar mount

Patient is my stock 83 Quattro.

Last friday, the left side front swaybar-to-subframe mount broke when the
left wheel followed a long gentle dip while the right wheel stayed level.
The part broken is the 853 411 335. Has to order it at the dealer: 36
$CAN, expensive for such a simple metal strap.

In the meantime, I removed the rear swaybar from the car and swaped one of
the rear mount to the front (same part). Now I can still use the car.
Now, this morning, each time I turn right and the car leans a bit, I can
feel a "klunk" in the footwell area. So I guess there is still some
problem with the sway bar.

So, what can cause this part breakage?
I guess metal fatigue is an answer but I seriously doubt this is the case.
The strap are heavy gage metal, and rust is minimal. And there is no play
between the strap, the subframe and the bushing.

Anybody has a clue or BTDT?

Now the trick question.

Everybody here knows how bad is the understeer on a stock urQ.
My (limited) understanding of chassis tuning makes me believe that
removing the rear sway bar will give the front end more grip (not more
grip overall, but the car will be more balanced), to the expense of body
lean.
Am I right?
Or installing a bigger sway bar at the rear (like a 4000Q front bar) is
the way to go to kill understeer?

TIA,

Louis-Alain
