... it is a pretty simple operation really ... measure all the gaps and
compare against specs ... for any that are out of spec you will need to pull
the shim, measure the thickness and replace it with one that is the
appropriate thickness to bring the clearance into spec.  The problem you can
have is that if the valves wear too much you won't be able to get a shim
thin enough.  The thing is that other marques use the same shims as Audi
did, so don't just look at an Audi dealer ... I think it was possible to get
a thinner shim than the minimum Audi part from a FLAPS ... 

There are two special tools that make the job pretty simple ... one
depresses the bucket and the other reaches around the cam to grip the shim
...
