Here is a technique proposed by a fellow lister. Chemical stripping seems
the way to go.

then GABE replied:
No, the plastic won't melt (I think you mean dissolve, chemical vs physical
change). Like I said, less than a minute. Clean the chrome first with soap
and lukewarm water to make sure there is no oily grime that prevents the
muriatic acid from getting to the chrome. The gassing (hydrogen release)
will stop when the chrome is gone also the part will no longer have the
chrome appearance. Rinse well and neutralize if you wish with a solution of
baking soda and rinse well again.

then Louis-Alain asked:
THAT's a good idea!
Any tip on time/concentration/warnings? Won't the plastic melt ?

then GABE said:
I recommend stripping the chrome with muriatic acid. It takes only seconds
at room temperature since the chrome thickness is in millionths (0.00000
x").

gabe

Louis-Alain asked:
-----Original Message-----
Is there a rubbery paint (or primer) available ? Something that will hold
to the chrome but won't be chipped by the road debris? Spray or brush, it
doesn't matter.
