Ben,
I also had fuel vapors in the car for years.
There is a braided vent hose from the top of the tank to the fuel filler.
It has an OD of about 1".
This hose gets very dry and cracked. Replace this hose.

I have been trying to track down the source of fuel vapors getting into the
cabin since I got this car. I have replace numerous lines, including the
ones at the tank, but still keep getting fuel vapors in the car. The
phenomenon seem to happen mostly upon high boost conditions - that is I
notice the smell after hard acceleration.
As I have been replacing all my vacuum lines, and checked thoroughly for
fuel leaks in the hard lines and not detected any leaks.
Before i replaced the rear lines, the smell seemed to be coming from the
trunk. Now it seems to eminate from the right front of the car/glovebox
area, but those hard lines are solid.
Is it possible that this has something to do with the carbon canister?
Also, where is the PCV valve that is supposedly on this car - '83 Ur Quattro
early VIN.
Ben
