Many thanks to all those who replied regaring my plea for help (sent under my other pen name - spot.onthe road at virgin .net
This is where I eat my hat (or humble pie). I feel a bit of prat for jumping to conclusions as I'll explain.

In my headlong rush to diagnose I assumed that the recently fitted front discs had been cheap quality and had warped, so I bought another pair and fitted these to no avail. I never gave the rears a thought. The problem, I feel sure, is the rear disks(rotors) with possibly the calipers being the ultimate cause.
So the other morning I took the car up the road and pulled on the hand brake, and had a pulsing hand brake.
Upon inspection, the rear discs are shot and I guess the calipers too. We'll see when I get 5 minutes to really check it out.

Just for info re: suggestions of hydraulic pump causing the problem: the brakes on the 1993 Euro A100s (2.0L AAD 4 Cyl engine)are vacuum assisted. The Power steering pump only assists the steering on this model. Thanks for all the suggestions anyway, sorry to have wasted everyones time.

All the best

Keith

moral of the story - never assume, check first, it saves your pennies.
