How many times do you think your EM has been heat cycled in the past 23
years?  If it isn't cracked now you are probably good to go.  Some folks
believe that there's some relationship to right side engine mount
failures and cracking ... and there's no doubt that the rotation of the
engine due to the loss of support will add some stress to the exhaust
... so keep a close eye there and you are probably fine with the EM
you've got now.  

I had to do the EM shortly after I got my car in '86 ... "fortunately"
in my case the EM was intact ... I had a few studs break ... at that
time I had the mounting surface machined (by the shop that did all of
the other Audi 5-cyl turbo EMs :) ... never had a problem since ... and
I don't expect to.  I've got a new 2-piece that I'll use with the worked
over motor ... but before it goes in it will be thermal coated ...
