Simple, James.
They were used from 1989-94 Audi V8 and the UrS4 series from 1992-94
everywhere except the US (maybe Canada). Principle reason was to retain the
15" wheel. Obviously, this thinking changed as people liked the larger
wheels and HP/torque figures grew. So ~ 5 years. The probable reason that
UFOs got a bad rap in the US was because (I'm theorizing here) those drivers
with warping problems used their cars mostly for city driving, whereas the
UFOs were designed for more than occasional "stretching your legs" Autobahn
driving. :-)
