[urq] Dipping vs Blasting

I think conventional wisdom (no BTDT here) is that dipping unibody cars runs
a high risk of leaving some of the chemicals behind in cracks and crevices,
so they tend to leach out months or years later if not thoroughly rinsed
and/or neutralized. On the other hand, I've seen media-blasted cars after
the fact, and it's pretty effective. Either way, a lot probably depends on
who is doing the job. Here is one web resource that discusses the different
methods:

You probably already know that either method will require giving the bare
metal a protective primer/coating soon after. A friend recommends Sikkens
Washprimer CR; see http://www.sikkens.com.au/tis/sikk_cr/wpcr.pdf.

Mark, if you get any private replies about reputable and competant bodyshops
in the NE, I'd appreciate it if you would share. I'm in MA.

Regards,
John

Subject: [urq] Dipping vs Blasting

Hi All,

After I remove all of the (few) remaining parts from my Urq shell, I was
thinking of having the shell dipped or media blasted to bring the entire
thing down to bare metal. There is enough rust on it that I don't want to
assume all is well under the undercoating and paint, and I do not really
want to hand strip it. I want the body to be returned to better than new
condition, so I believe the best way to ensure this is to have the shell
stripped. Any BTDT? I have my own opinions on the pluses and minuses of each
procedure, and would like to hear what the rest of the Urq world thinks.

Also, does anyone know of any *VERY* reputable and competant bodyshops in
the VT, MA, NH, Upstate NY area? As close to Bennington (southern) VT as
possible. Thanks!

   - Marc
