Jon:
John Koenig gave you a solid response about
cage installation. Chris Palumbo of NJ, (Palumbo Construction Co.)
had one mounted in his car, from NEQ, he can probably help you.
I have been in lots of race cars, and bars that interfere with
vision are horrible. Also, the door protection is critical, as you
know my A4 race car has NASCAR style door beams that extend
out to the outer door skin for protection. Obviously this would
be extreme for a road car. Sunroof also causes problems with some
installations as that is where the cross-brace may go.
Are you planning on just a "hoop" behind the passenger and driver seats?
I thought you can also make an Autopower bar a weld
in, rather than the bolt in is that still an option?
Piper Motorsports in Manassas, VA is famous for their
custom and pricey installations, but they can get the tubing to the
smallest accepted diameter and close to the windshield pillars. Some
installations
can be reinforced for track usage, and minimalized for street use
If I were going through the trouble of installing a
cage (I will be installing one in the RS2URQ) I would
make sure it complied with SCCA specs, otherwise, you
might be designing a pre-formed pretzel which is not
desireable when needed.
Dean Treadway has one in his car, as do many other folks
that you may get responses from one of these lists.
Rick Schwalenberg has a urq very similar to ours
(still hostage in shop and not quite finished
that is a very well prepared track/street car
and I am sure he can give you some good tips,
he is located near Colin in Dallas.
