Couldn't agree more. If your looking to develop a modern engine management
system, Megasquirt is the way to go....It's source code is open and can be
edited by anyone with engineering/programming skills. If you go to
http://www.jsm-net.demon.co.uk/msns-extra/setup.html and check out there
forums, you'll see that there are many people working on advanced functions
such as launch control, electronic boost control, water injection....etc.,
in addition to the basic timing and fuel control that MS can support
currently.
No it is not a turn key solution but it does have algorithms that will
calculatate a first esitimate on the correct input settings for the fuel and
now timing control. From there, one could probably obtain the fuel/timing
maps needed the MS forum....

... I poked around 034EFI.org ... so, how much does it cost to get a
system that can be bolted onto a car? It looks to me to be $1000+ just
for the ECU and the required peripherals ... more if you wanted more
capability. Frankly, I'd be more interested in something like 034EFI if
it interfaced directly with the timing sensors that Audi already
incorporated in out engines! If you have to add a toothed wheel
somewhere, then there isn't that much difference as compared to
Megasquirt. The thing that is cool about Megasquirt is that it is more
of an open development environment ... check out www.megasquirt.info and
see all the forums and all of the tools that are available. I haven't
been checking there lately, but I see that there is now a Megasquirt-II
system that supports ignition and Idle Speed Control ... looks like the
cost is 1/3 of the 034EFI setup. There are forums to discuss VW/Audi
Apps there too. I guess it all comes down to whether you want turn key
or not ... with the 034EFI set up you definitely get turn key. It might
be worthwhile to investigate what you can get with Megasquirt before
making the final decision ...
