Ok:
Worked on this a bit more. Here's some options from the midwest idea. I spoke with a couple customers (fellow q heads) that own a small track (.7mi- narrow) in SW Michigan about 2 hours from Chicago (Benton Harbor MI area). They have agreed that hosting a UPG at their facility would be quite possible. They have available 2 garages, plenty of tent space, plenty of picturesque rolling countryside (for pics and tire kickin') and several hotels less than 15minute away.
The 2 garages and track would be available to us, the on site house is not. As such about the only thing we would need to provide is a couple of portapots, and outdoor cooking equipment/personnel, which I might be able to convince one of our midwest cooking pros to provide. The nice thing about this place is that we can do a weekend gathering without issue, and early/late stayovers wouldn't be at issue.
I could also arrange some track time at Gingermann Raceway (35minutes away) if there is interest, but that would most likely be on a Monday, and would require track dollar commitment pretty early.
I'd be most happy to take on this if the interest is high enough. I'm sure I can get a tech session setup (no lifts, but plenty of space), and try for some guest speakers as well. Also have some connections to professional photographers for this event.
I have been to several of the local Chicago Chapter gatherings at this facility, and it's perfect for this type of event, rain or shine. I would suggest a June or early July date as primary, or a mid september date as a secondary. All dates of course, must be approved by facility owners, but now is the time to lock that down.
Let me know your thoughts on this folks, in the meantime, the first unofficial UPG hosting of 2005 will be at Gruppe-q Steamboat 2005 less than a month away.
