[urq] Puzzling stalling situation

Justin,
Interesting. Tony Lum suggested the ignition switch, which I'm suspecting
as well, since how hot can things get when it's -15°C at sea level? I
rather believe the corroded battery cable more on the V8. Remember that the
car just stalls and won't immediately restart -- so mehinks somethhing is
getiing warm/hot enough to disrupt an electrical connection. But I'm all
for finding out what all the possibilities are...

Ingo,
I used to have the same problem in an 1988 Audi 80. After replacing the
starter, and the ignition switch without solving the problem, I was
getting a bit perturbed. I eventually decided to replace the B+ cable
end (it was a bit corroded) at the starter. When I cut the old end off
and stripped off some insulation to put on the new end, I found my
problem. The copper wire that made up the cable was green with
oxidation, and very brittle. It had corroded inside the insulation.
Whenever the car was hot, it would not start, sometimes the starter
solenoid would not even click. Replaced the cable and never had another
problem starting that car.
Hope that helps.
Justin R.

Well, on a few occasions now, the '84 has stalled on me (coincidenally
just
before I was about to park the car anyway). What makes this a bit
more
disconcerting is that if I attempt to start the car right after this,
the
starter won't turn over-- no click, no nothing. If I wait a while (at
least
5 minutes), she'll start right up. Methinks it's an electrical
heat-related
issue and I have an idea where the problem lies, but appreciate any
suggestions/experiences.

Mine does this every summer when the temp goes close to triple digits. I
have tried 3 different starters, and had the original rebuilt twice to
be
thorough. I also tried several insulation techniques to no avail. The
original heat
shield has always been in place as well.
I relayed the starter last September, and renewed the main cable going
to
it. Not sure if it "cured" it or not, as it didn't reach the temps
necessary to
give it a true test.
Oh- I also vented the hood to let the heat rise and escape.
