don't you have to pull the timing belt off anyway to get to the water pump?

diagnosed it as having a bad water pump. They wanted to replace that

Because of financial limitations, I only had them do the water pump.
Was this a bad idea? Can I do the timing belt later? I don't know
when it was replaced, am waiting to hear back from the PO. The car
has 100k miles on it, and the PO was meticulous. I may have a spare
one in my garage, and can probably do it at home under better
conditions, but what, pray tell, am I getting myself into? Should I
have just let him do it? The difference in price is about $300, which
I want to avoid, but I don't want my car to die on the way back to
Syracuse.
