Hi Andrew,
Have you been able to get the car running yet? If not, prior to starting
it, you may want to have the mechanic verify that all the timing elements in
the motor line up correctly. If the timing belt was recently replaced, and
the cam, crank and flywheel all line up properly, there really is no need to
replace the t-belt. However, if you're unable to verify it's age, I would
highly recommend doing it, especially for only another $300. Cheap
insurance, because if the timing belt goes, you're potentially looking at
piston meets valve and a huge expense to rebuild the head/motor (or a good
excuse to upgrade to a 20v ;)
HTH,
Jim

Subject: [urq] Water Pump and Timing Belt was "help"
Due to weather conditions and lack garage space I took my limping quattro to
a local foreign motors place, where they got it running but diagnosed it as
having a bad water pump. They wanted to replace that and the timing chain.
Because of financial limitations, I only had them do the water pump.
Was this a bad idea? Can I do the timing belt later? I don't know when it
was replaced, am waiting to hear back from the PO. The car has 100k miles
on it, and the PO was meticulous. I may have a spare one in my garage, and
can probably do it at home under better conditions, but what, pray tell, am
I getting myself into? Should I have just let him do it? The difference in
price is about $300, which I want to avoid, but I don't want my car to die
on the way back to Syracuse.
-A
