Just a data point here-
with temps at 100F here in Denver these days - slightly higher on the
roadways - I took the car out on the highway over the weekend to see
what temp she would be running at in such hot weather. Cruising at
80mph (w/ambient of ~100F) my temp gauge said about 87C (190F). At
one point I exited and stopped - temps climbed to 95C - but dropped
quickly once back on the highway. On slow seconday streets temps
hovered around 95C (203F). This is with 3B motor and stock urq
cooling system. I was not driving the car hard on the slow streets
and the highway was flat.
With these kind of water temps I wonder if a big alum rad would even
be much of an improvement....

Yes! While you're getting 100 degrees we're getting 107 degrees and
the MC UrQ ('83) never goes above 87-90 degrees even after slowing
down. On the highway she's running at 85 degrees. My '84 would go up
to 100 on shutdown with newly recored main and aux. radiators. Al is
the way to go.
