I did poke around under the car last night and the bearing support is pretty soft. It's not separated but it doesn't look very healthy. There is no indication of a diff problem - the output flanges are a little loose as the splines are wearing, but spinning it by hand yielded no funny noises or "catching". After a bit of thinking it makes a lot of sense as I had been hearing a pinking noise from under the car, when the noise occuring, and I determined that the noise was occuring due to the driveshaft moving around.
I still can't believe this car - It's been through hell, by the looks of the body, but the underneath is still solid as a rock and it runs beautifully.

Im going to suggest looking at your center support bearing. At high mileages the bearing itself may in fact still be good, however the rubber collar that secures it tends to let loose and will cause an unloaded vibration and other assorted goofiness.
