[urq] Re: INvalid VIN AND role of "my" Registry

Nothing looks "wrong" with this (US/Canadian style) VIN on its face: all the
letters and numbers sequences are consistent with other 1984 urquattros.
The only possible problem that I can think of is that the "check digit" (the
"4" after the "85" doesn't match the check digit rules (which I will let
someone else verify).
See http://home.planet.nl/~fransang/checkdig.html for the "rules."

[Actually, I got intrigued and did a quick check--I got an indication that
the check digit code should be "0" not "4" (e.g., 330/11=33, so remainder is
"0") so that could either explain the problem and just show I couldn't
calculate the check digit correctly. Since I have a true Euro urq, there is
no check digit for my urq and I've never calculated it before.]

1984 (E) # 900095 is not an '84 previously listed on the Registry, but I
don't claim to have a record of every car imported into North America. On
its face, the VIN appears to be a correct one (unless CarFax has a routine
that runs the check digit on all or most cars and finds a "tilt" in that
step). The check digit is something required by the US (and maybe Canada's)
DOT for anti-theft purposes, because it does not exist in Euro urq's vins
(there's just a "Z" in that slot for all true Euro cars), so maybe there is
a mismatch. However, maybe someone transposed some numbers in the vin code.

By the way, I'm always accessible to check VINs for anybody (you get to
calculate and verify the check digit!). If you're an owner (and there are a
few new owners on the list that I haven't connected with me yet) who hasn't
been in touch, please send my your complete VIN the car's color and the
city, state and your 5-digit zip code), and if the car is in the Registry,
I'll tell you what info has been reported by a prior owner. If you are
looking to buy someone's urq, please have them contact me with an OK to
share info with you (as a prospective buyer).

For historical reasons, a number of owners back when I started this in 1992
did not want to share their vins, ownership and/or modification info with me
if that info might or would have been made public. So this Registry is not
on-line and stuff is only shared with others with the owner's OK. There are
several other Registries that will accept urq info and are public, but I
feel obliged to honor my "not a public Registry" promise to about half the
folks who ultimately registered their cars with me. But, as Bill Bennett
said, the Registry's purpose is to help all the owners and prospective
owners, car theft victims, etc., and I'm here to help (no charge, of course,
but turnaround time may be a few days).
Bill

  I should have indicated the VIN - which is WAUDC0854EA900095. I didn't
want to bother Mr. Bremer.
