You don't need the tool if the 'check engine' bulb is in place.

Codes are volitile so disappear when the ignition is switched off. Drive the 
car, leave the engine running and put a spare fuse in the slot on top of the 
fuel pump relay for approx 4 seconds. The check light will then flash the 
first stored code - when you're recorded it, insert the fuse for a few 
seconds again and the next code will flash. Keep repeating until there are 
no more codes.
