Not much to tell here... I was wrong about the CV joint. After jacking the car up, and grabbing a wheel to move the steering from side to side, it became clear that the noise wasn't coming from a CV. While Gary Erickson (who graciously loaned his garage to an out of towner) watched, I moved the steering. Gary quickly noticed that the noise was coming from a bolt hitting the steering cylinder mounting point for the tie rod assemblies. One of the trans to block bolts (the one right under the heater valve) had apparently backed out completely. At that point, it was hitting the tie rod assembly mount on the steering cylinder as it moved past the loose bolt.
Hey, it was a stupid simple fix... but it sure had me fooled. It sounded so bad on tight turns, I was certain it was a CV. Live and learn... never had seen that before. It just gave Gary and I more time to chat quattros.
And again, many thanks to Gary, and the numerous other Portland listers who offered their help. Sure is a great group of folks on these lists.
Dave
