Yes, it should die regardless of tube or not.  Looks like you have a
vacuum leak.  Not a serious one since it eventually dies anyway.

The tube was added for better venting of the crankcase, otherwise all the
blowby had to go through the cylinder head to get to the PCV system.
Some '84 and '85s had the tube, and some did not.  There was no rhyme or
reason to that.  I haven't seen any '83s with the tube though.
