... not clear to me it is appropriate to blame the fasteners ... You 
indicated that you were using a ball-tipped bit to break the fasteners 
loose, and I suspect you used the same when you torqued them in originally 
... IMO that's the root of your problem.  Ball-tipped wrenches by definition 
do not give very much area over which the torque can be distributed ... I 
use them all the time for installing and removing loosened fasteners, but 
when comes time to torque them down I'll switch to a standard wrench.
