So I posted last month that my trunk release cable had snapped. I was lucky inasmuch as the break was an inch or 2 from the toggle in the door post. So to open the trunk all I had to do was pull the outer cable after removing the trim panel.
Audijim of Audi5turbotech has found me a replacement but its arrival is uncertain. So I looked for a replacement core. Firstly I measured the old core at 1.2 mm or 0.45" and was able to find a motorcycle clutch cable and welding wire that met the dimensions.
The stainless welding wire is very like the broken cable and has a high level of rigidity unlike the multistrand flexible clutch cable. The clutch cable is also supplied with swaged ends and its flexibility and fit seemed the better way to go. I purchased a few wire end locks from Aircraft Spruce Co. that one uses for microlight throttle cables and put one on the end that I retained the swage and 2 on the open end.
Threading the cable into the old Bowden cable sheath was easy and there was no interference. With the end locks secured, it works perfectly. I probably wont replace this set up with the new one when it arrives, or at least until it breaks again!
So JIC this happens to anyone else...
Colin
