[urq] Rotary Compressor?

The 4Kq can be converted easily by just updating to the 5-cyl 80/90
setup. It's been suggested that I can do the same to the urq by getting
the rotary compressor and bracket from a later 5Kt or 200. I'll be
looking into that, but interference with the condenser might be an
issue. AFAIK, all the other small-body I5 turbo cars (S2, RS2) kept the
compressor on the passenger side.

I'm not really interested in staying with the York unless it's cost
effective. I'm still waiting to get my second opinion on it, and I
suspect it may be fine. Thanks for the offer on yours, but I think I'd
rather try to rebuild mine first, if that's what's required.

As for R134a, mine was converted several years ago when it was still in
Canada. Apparently, they have no choice up there. It was done by a
dealership, and the compressor was rebuilt at that time. They also
replaced the rec/drier and exp valve, but I don't think they switched
the hoses to a barrier type.

I was pretty happy with the performance last summer. My only complaint
was that it wouldn't cool well at a standstill. I'll probably keep 134a
in it, and perform a rad fan upgrade to help with the standing
performance. This will be a good time to get someone to build some
barrier hoses for it, too.

Of course, by the time I get all this sorted out, the summer will be
fizzling out...

There is an issue in european car from "Project 4kq" several years back
that outlines a rotary converion I think. I have the issue but it is
packed away an unobtainable right now...

I got a supposedly new (looked rebuilt to me but what do I know....?)
Mini York last summer for closer to $250 IIRC - although it may have
been $400-$500.....But frankly I think my old one was fine - I was in a
rush to get the car ready for the CT trip and didn't want to risk
anything so just sprung for the new compressor...I would sell my old one
for $150 + shipping - and if it doesn't work for you I would give you
your money back - your only risk would be shipping both ways....and
labor.

IMO- I think the M.Y. is _sufficient_ - but I would NOT recommend
converting to R134 - I did and am planning to convert back to R12.

A local A/C shop tells me that my compressor is the source of a major
leak. While I'm getting a second opinion on that, I've been researching
my options. I don't relish paying $600 for a rebuilt compressor. Has
anyone converted to a rotary style? I know there are lots of brackets
available for converting cars with full-size Yorks, but I wonder if
anyone knows of an adapter for the "mini" York on the urq. Space is
tight between the pully and the front of the condenser, so I presume
I'll need a relatively shallow design with the ports on top.

TIA,
Eric
