I think you are lusting after the Renault 5 Turbo 2.
The Renault 5 turbo was a very different machine.
Front engined and prone to spontaneous combustion 

On a budget I would go with:-

sport quattro
RS2
'66 Alfa Romeo Giula Sprint GT
'66 Lotus Elan S2
Lancia Stratos
'75 Mercedes 450SEL 6.9
'70 Triumph Stag
'88 BMW M5
Caterham Superlight R500
Land Rover Defender

Ohhh...  I agree whoheatedly with the R5 choice... although I'd pass on
the Vette.  Not a bad list at all.

Renault R5 Turbo
95 Escort Cosworth RS
Volvo S1800 -- unless I can find a Saab Sonnet in good condition 911tt
(as close to current as possible)
2003 Corvette Z06
Supercharged Toyota LandCruiser -- if you're going to have a powerful
SUV, it might as well be fun and reliable ;-)

Oh, and the list is not necessarily in order...  :-)
