Is is possible that there is a batch of "odd-ball" hydraulic fluid
reservoirs in some cars?
I kept a message from Maurits Jonkergouw (6 Jan 2003)
"would like to know if any of you actually saw what parts are inside
the PS fluid container. ETKA shows many parts for the left hand drive
car, including (from top to bottom);
knurled nut;
metal cover;
gasket;
BM8 hex nut;
oil strainer;
pressure spring;
cup;
centralizing sleeve;
filter element;
oil filter.
My container looks the same from the outside , but I got:
the knurled nut;
the metal cover;
the gasket;
...lock ring/washer;
...a very different looking oil strainer which is directly visible
when you pull off the cover, it's more like a spoke wheel made of
plastic and the metal screen is horizontal and flat and does not
'sink' in the container, it seals the container completely off from
the top, while the ETKA version looks more like a pot with a closed
top and has a cylinder shaped vertical screen, on the bottom it has a
rubber O ring which goes up side down into the container, thus not
sealing it off from the top. My strainer is held in place with a M6
lock ring on the guide pin and the ETKA version is held by a DM8? hex
nut;
the pressure spring;
the oil filter.
I did saw the real 'ETKA' oil strainer and it's inner diameter is in
fact M8, so it won't seal off my M6 guide pin! If I want to 'update'
my container, this oil strainer and filter element won't fit (which I
already own) and I would also need to buy the other parts I guess,
but still I'm afraid it won't fit my 6mm guide pin !!
I've noticed on ETKA there are differences between the left hand
drive (#857 422 388) and right hand drive (#857 422 388 A) oil
strainer and pressure spring. Perhaps someone installed a RHD oil
strainer in my LHD car in the past? And why, in God's name, did Audi
made different parts?
If you have the RHD car, would you be so kind to lift off your cover
to see what oil strainer you have, please?
BTW I saw my container is only half full with oil, how much oil does
it need, I can't see any MIN-MAX indicators...

I kept the note as my car (Feb 1985 build date) also has a hydraulic
reservoir that does not correspond internally to the parts fiche or the
diagram in the introductory service training manual. It's a few years ago
since I worked on this but, if I remember correctly, there was a paper
element and a single fibre element. I couldn't come up with a replacement
paper element (even with the dealer's assistance) and, rather than running
with no filtration, I stacked 3 fibre elements (part no. 857 422 385)
together. It is possible that the car Louis-Alain is working on is similar
as the description would fit my car if I had given up on the filtration and
reassembled the resevoir without paper or fibre elements. What was the
build date?
