For those of you that have problems with the front blinkers (or its
wiring), I have found an alternative that works well. In fact, the part
numbers are in ETKA, and the idea came from working on Eric's 1985 front
end. This car uses the Typ44 one piece blinkers instead of the older 2
piece Typ81 as on my 1983.
The part numbers are 443 953 055 and 443 953 056. If you use them,
you'll have to use also the 1/4 turn socket 443 953 053 x2 to fit the
new housings. Price was very reasonable at 36$ each lamp, but the
connector+wiring was way too expensive at 57$ each. So a stop at a VW
scrapyard gave me similar connectors (165 953 123) for 10$ each. The
parts were scavenged on Golf and Jetta 1989-92 and Passats 90-94. If you
follow this route, grab also the other connector that is on the donor
car wiring loom, they are of the sealed variety, much better that what
is on the 1983...
Now, I have properly sealed OEM blinkers that cost 1/2 the cost of the
Typ81 blinkers. The lens is correctly slanted to fit our bumpers, only
it is a bit "too clear" to be identical to the older lamps. It's only a
problem for Martin P. when he'll enter his "Coucours D'Élégance" 1983
car at Pebble beach...
For those with ETKA, the relevant page for the urQ is not showing the
two units, but the Coupe 1987 9-53, 136-10 drawing shows all the bits.
If someone wants a PDF of these pages, let me know.
Cheers !
Louis-Alain
