Probably the spring moving on the spring seat BTDT on my '85 with H&Rs.
Not much you can do about it.. looks like you made sure to eliminate
everything else...
Other option is the subframe moving. Check the torque on the subframe
bolts, it's a bit tricky with the aluminium mounts.. you sure they bottomed
out in the subframe?? BTDT on my '83.
Cheers

Subject: [urq] Need help with ever persistent clunk in front end......
OK, so my '83 has had this clunk in its front end since I have had the
car. Basically, when I back up and turn the wheel (and sometimes going
forward during a hard L/R transition) I get this loud metallic clunking
sound from the front end. It sounds like something is either catching &
releasing or just shifting abruptly. Can't get a good feel for what it
is through the steering wheel. I figured I had some worn pivot or
something, but I have replaced absolutely EVERYTHING up front. The
noise has persisted throughout the parts replacement process. Any
ideas????? Here is wheat I have already replaced:
Strut mounts
New coil-overs
Re-built steering rack (seems to be tight and bolted down securely)
Front bearings
Both tie-rods
Ball joints
Sub-frame bushings (aluminum now)
A-arm bushings
Motor and trans mounts
Any ideas as to what I have over-looked will be appreciated. Thanks
