The bolt was a "head bolt" stripped in the block, not the head. It turned  
back out although it was a rough jagged retreat on the way out. It had metal  
thread shavings all over it from the cast iron. Not pretty!!
When it pops and lets go, you get the same feeling in your gut as when your  
car is hit by another driver.
