I had the twin rad setup orignially, then my aux rad broke and I used only
the main for about 9 months, then I replaced it with a Dialynx rad.
In normal or fast driving, I have not noticed any difference to the water
temp with any of the options.
In traffic the original setup is best - both the main rad only and the
Dialynx rad heat up quicker. It's not a problem - just means the fan runs
more, I've never had an overheat problem.
In any conditions I have driven or sat in traffic, I cannot notice any
difference in performance between the OE main rad only and the Dialynx rad.
I'm sure that, on paper, the Dialynx is more efficient due to the larger
core and aluminium construction - I just can't notice it on the street.
My honest advice to anyone considering a larger main rad to allow the
deletion of the aux rad, would be to try the main OEM rad on it's own first.
You will find that it get hot quicker in traffic, but so long as it stays
under control - who cares? A large alu rad will run the fan just as much in
traffic IME.
As for airflow considerations, I'm not sure.
I look at mine and think it's got to be good to have all that extra air
blowing over the turbo & manifolds. But then I start thinking about
pressure - there's all sorts of ducting in around the engine bay to direct
airflow and create high and low pressure areas. Then I've removed the aux
rad and raised the pressure over the engine. I wonder what that does to the
efficiency of the main rad, intercooler, oil cooler etc?
Jim.
