[urq] RE : Intermittent no start - pretty sure I have the fix

Audi hood up....problem?......just shine up some stuff and you are
showing off unique 5cyl turbo engine!! You can also check your oil more
frequently this way..... NOTE- tends to attract motorheads, not
hotties....but hey, whatever you are into is ok w/ me

Another thing you can do is add a duct and different switch for the
injector cooler fan setup and air cool that general area at will. The
root of the problem is dual methinks.....excessive heat & poor wiring
setup.

I added spruce aircraft heat shielding b/w the downpipe and starter and
it was not enough. Solenoid is wrapped in similar heat insulation as
well. (I think I will now reposition it to aid intake temps.) I never
actually measured temps down there after insulation as I was too lazy. I
even have a ir thermometer. My unscientific belief of the effect is no
practical amount of insulation will prevent heat soaking that area. It
just takes a little longer, I could accurately predict whether or not
the car would start by outside temp, oil temp & operation time. Rewire
is only fix that will get you going reliably.......i don't think we ever
came up with heat soak fix short of 20v conversion ;-(

Anyone have a spare wx head? Ben? Billybob?

I hung the relay on the back side of the bumper just above the
alternator and made a little "relay cozy" out of aluminum sheeting to
shelter it from moisture. There are probably more clever spots, but this
was the easiest . Yes this is a cheap one to impliment at less than $20
and I bet it fixes the problem. This will net the same effect as jumping
the solenoid like Jim mentioned

Just in case anyone is unclear on the relay thing, Huw's headlight relay
page is a great primer on relaying -anything- and can be follwed (using
only one circuit-duh) for this exercise:

http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/headlight-simple.htm

If you have it hooked up right, the car should start with the fuse in,
and with the fuse out, you should just hear the relay click when you
crank the ignition switch.

As far as being embarrassed you're having a problem with an '80's era
Audi...uhh...I've had so many embarrassing incidents (why do your
neighbors -always- drive by when you're stranded with a dead car?) that
I just don't care anymore :-)

Good Luck!

*****Yeah, I though of this, but I don't want to have people say "These
