[urq] [V8] Liquid penetrant test - 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone beats Kroil etc.

For what it's worth, I had a similar problem trying to change the rear diff. lube in my
S4. The only thing that finally ended up doing the trick was patient and carefully-aimed
use of a punch-type tool in an impact chisel. Even then, the plug was unrecognizeable by
the time I finally got it loose.
If I'm not mistaken, you're dealing with a steel plug in an aluminum housing, so that
might make heat especially useful.
The plug probably has a magnet on the backside, so drilling through it to use an extractor
would be slightly complicated, and drilling through it is probably the only way to get the
depth you need for a big enough extractor.
My personal vote is to deal with it now and have it done (and/or in case you want to flush
it after so many years), but that's a personal choice.
Good luck!

With all this "Audi Frozen bolt talk" My 1984 911 was starting to feel left out.
I went to change the transmission oil on my 911 with 62,000 miles on it and am having
nothing but problems.
I purchased this so-called special oil (Swepco 201) at a tune of $47.00 a gallon, bought a
nice 1/2 inch drive 17mm hex socket and set aside a hour to do the job. WRONG!!!!
Took me a half hour to find the drain plug which was buried in caked in dirt. All the
books said make sure you do the "Fill" plug first just in case you drain the oil and then
can't get the "Fill" plug out.
The fill plug came out with no problem but the "drain" plug is totally stripped and after
an hour of playing with it is now flush with the casing. (No allen head is even left on
the plug)
My question is: Is it worth drilling and trying to get it out with an ez-out or should I
just give up and suction out the old oil from the "fill" plug and re-fill it. I'm afraid
the suction method is not going to get the sludge out.
I've owned the car for 18 years and have never changed the trans oil!!
Any BTDT would be appreciated
Thanks,
Bob Blake
