Follow-up - thanks for all the suggestions
I ordered some tapered pins from McMaster-Carr http://www.mcmaster.com/

At first glance there appears to be no taper. They will screw in and be
secured with loctite on pin threads as well as nut (provided).
Quantity is perfect and I received the order within a day. The pins are
exactly what is needed.
Note: I ordered mild/plain steel as I found many grades of stainless steel to
be barely magnetic.
These will be installed into an adjustable cam sprocket with flat aluminum
face and used to trigger either injectors or ignition. I could have gotten
away with cutting the end off the proper size bolts, but these are more sturdy
and uniform as well as look good.

Ben,
I didn't hear back from you so imagine that you solved your issue. If not.
Good source for dowel
pins(http://www.fastenermart.com/html/520080000040.html), although most
machine shops will give you a handful for free. They can also give you the
proper hole and drill bit size for a press fit. Using a chart like this:
http://www.engineersedge.com/dowel_pin.htm
I still have no idea of what you are working on since I don't follow the lists
often enough. Most of the alternate timing solutions I've played with went off
the crank for accuracy (necessary for old pushrod/timing chain V8 stuff). Good
luck with your project. I would love to hear more about what you are doing.
Cheers,
Christopher

Ben,
Why wouldn't you want to take this from the crank instead of the cams?
Distributor driven off of cams?
Tell us more about your project-What are you trying to do? What ignition are
you using?

I'm trying to locate a source for pins that can be use for magnetic pickup
triggered ignition(or other).
These would be steel pins that can be threaded or bolted onto a cam sprocket
or crank pulley.
Anyone here know?
Ben
