Gary, it sounds as if your sensor is correct.
    Part Number is 035979501, it is an NTC(Negative  Temperature Coeeficient) 
device and should read approximately 1,050 ohms at  70degF.
    The device is also marked:
                                         VDO  1185    12v
                                           804/3/6      125C
